One useful step this week.

A LITTLE MONDAY CATCH-UP.

Hey you,

Where are we with the UK plans?

Still researching? Comparing offers? Already here and discovering that buying groceries is a recurring responsibility?

Whichever stage you’re at, there’s something for you this week.

We’ve got a £5,000 tuition discount worth checking, a January accommodation deadline and a little help turning “I want to study in the UK” into an actual plan.

Open your notes app. We’re giving it something useful to do.

THE FUNDING FIND

First, £5,000 off tuition deserves a closer look.

Considering a January 2027 master’s at the University of Birmingham? Its Postgraduate High Fliers Scholarship offers eligible students £5,000 off tuition on selected courses.

Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya and Cameroon are among the eligible countries of permanent residence. Your passport alone doesn’t settle eligibility: where you permanently live matters too.

You must pay international fees and self-fund. External sponsorship can make you ineligible.

The date to save: 7 December 2026, at 23:59 UK time.

By then, you need to have met your offer conditions, paid the required deposit, and received and accepted your unconditional offer. There’s no separate scholarship application.

So, unfortunately, starting the course application at 11pm that evening is not the strategy.

Your next move: check your exact course and eligibility, then work backwards from the deadline. This is a tuition discount, so rent, flights and living expenses still need their own budget.

START HERE

“Tima, I haven’t even chosen a university.” Start here.

You don’t need your entire future figured out before you begin. You need a shortlist you can actually compare.

This week, choose three courses and write down:

  • The fit: what will you learn, and how does it support what you want to do afterwards?
  • The entry requirements: qualifications, English-language evidence and any experience required.
  • The money: tuition, deposit, accommodation and everyday living costs.
  • The dates: course application, funding and accommodation deadlines.

Use each university’s official course page. Save the links beside your notes so you can find the information again.

Your task: complete one course comparison today. Three universities researched properly will tell you more than thirty tabs quietly judging you.

And if your plan only works with funding, make that part of your search from the beginning.

FINDING YOUR ROOM

January arrivals: the room needs a plan too.

Joining Bristol as a Semester 2 Study Abroad student?

Accommodation applications opened on 20 October, and you need to apply by 10 November 2026 to meet the January accommodation-guarantee deadline. Offers begin from 17 November.

This applies to that specific student group—not everyone starting at Bristol in January.

For everyone looking for a room, ask these questions before paying:

What is the total contract cost? Are bills included? Do I need a guarantor? When can I collect my keys? What happens if my visa is delayed or refused?

A beautiful room deserves your attention. The contract deserves it too.

Try this message:

“Hi, I’m an international student starting [course] in [month]. Could you confirm availability, the full contract cost, upfront payments, guarantor requirements and your visa-delay or refusal cancellation terms?”

Save the reply alongside the contract.

ARRIVAL NOTES

Booked the flight? Now plan the bit after landing.

Future you will be tired, carrying luggage and trying to get online. Let’s leave them decent instructions.

Before travelling, write down:

  • Your accommodation address and key-collection arrangements.
  • Your route from the airport, including the final journey to your room.
  • Your transport booking details and luggage allowance.
  • Who to contact if your flight arrives late.

And check the dates on university airport offers. Birmingham’s Welcome 2026 free-coach voucher offer has ended; its page does not confirm a January 2027 service.

“Free airport transfer” is lovely. “For a different intake” is the detail we need to catch.

ALREADY HERE

Already in the UK? A small task for this week.

Find one university support service you’ve been meaning to use.

It could be academic writing support, the careers team, wellbeing support or your international student advisers. Look it up through your university website or student portal, then book a session or save the contact details.

You don’t have to wait until something becomes a crisis before asking for help.

If your course is nearly finished, start with careers: bring your CV and one job advert you’re interested in. It gives you something concrete to work through together.

YOUR TURN

Tima, InfoX’s illustrated newsletter host

Before you go, where are you in the journey?

Reply with the number that sounds like you:

1. Exploring courses and universities.
2. Applying or comparing offers.
3. Preparing to travel.
4. Already studying in the UK.
5. Planning life after graduation.

Add the one thing you’re stuck on. That’ll help us make future editions useful for the stage you’re actually at.

One useful step this week. We can start there.

Till next Monday,
Tima, with the InfoX team

P.S. Your friend who keeps saying “I’m thinking about studying abroad”? Forward this to them. The three-course shortlist is their homework too.
